THE VALUE OF PATIENCE

Author : TRIDIB BHATTACHARJEEApril 02, 2018

We now live in a world where the pace of living is increasing with almost each passing day. Consequently, the level of stress in our societies and workplace have also gone up substantially. One of the best ways to manage stress and keep our life in balance is by remaining patient. Patience as we all know is a virtue. Those who have patience can remain calm and avoid impulsive actions when faced with challenges. On the other hand impatience has little to offer us. Patience is beneficial to our health, happiness, relationships, and goals.

Benefits of Patience

It’s easier to be happy when we are patient. Impatient people are not experiencing positive feelings. They experience stress and anxiety. Challenging situations are more manageable when the situation can be approached with patience. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Has impatience ever benefitted you?
  2. How do you feel when you’re impatient? Are you stressed? Happy? Frustrated?
  3. Are the patient people you know more or less happy than the impatient people you know?

Patient people are healthier. The stress that impatient people feel is hard on their mind and body. Those that feel less stress suffer from fewer medical issues. You can potentially live longer and enjoy yourself more if you’re patient.

You can accomplish larger goals. Big goals require time. Time requires patience. Big goals are impossible without some measure of patience. Explore if at any point of time, your impatience had limited your success.

Some things are outside your control and patience smooths the journey. Overcoming an illness or injury can’t be sped up by sheer will or impatience. Our patience help us during the recovery phase.

You’ll make better decisions. Impatient people don’t take the necessary time to take decisions. Impatient people are stressed, and stressed people tend to be impulsive. Patience provides the time and space to contemplate the situation and make a wise decision.

As a self-exercise, make a list of instances when impatience has negatively impacted you. Consider your personal relationships, work, and finances. Impatience leads to poor decisions. Remind yourself of those times you’ve made your life more challenging by being impatient. Then consider a few instances when you have achieved personal or professional goals by remaining patient and overcoming persistent challenges. What are you interpreting? How do you feel about these 2 different scenarios?
